The Belgian eID card contains a dedicated “signature” certificate that enables the creation of a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES), the highest security level defined by the EU’s eIDAS regulation. Because it requires a physical smart card, a personal PIN, and a certificate from a Qualified Trust Service Provider, this digital signature is legally equivalent to a handwritten “wet-ink” signature across the entire European Union.
To enable eID in SIGN Butler, this requires an extra license. Discuss with your PDF Butler Account Manager for enabling Belgian eID signing.
- For eID, all signatures done on Sandboxes and PROD will be counted for pricing
- The installation requires multiple steps and is best to install in offices or desk computers on which the eID signing will happen frequently.
- An alternative to eID signing that is more modern and user-friendly is Itsme signing, this does not require extra software to be installed, is more user-friendly, adopted (most Belgian citizens will have it on their smartphone) and delivers the same level of QES
